KITCHEN and DINING HALL RENOVATION
The state of North Carolina is requiring all year-round camps to come under restaurant health codes by May 2012. In order for us to accomplish this, our kitchen (which was built around 1960) will need major renovations. In addition to the kitchen upgrades and additions, we would like to do some much-needed upgrades to the dining hall as well. The total project is estimated to cost just over $300,000. This is a major project but we are excited to see how God is going to provide!
For Phase 1, we are focusing on the required work in the kitchen. Here's what's been completed on the project so far: Demolition is done. The plumber has put the sewer drain lines in. The concrete flooring is back in. Most of the wall framing is done! Most of the indoor wall plumbing lines are in. Most of the electrical wires are pulled.
We estimate close to $30,000K has been saved in labor costs due to volunteer and year-round staff hours put in. Our staff are attending some auctions and saving some costs on purchasing used equipment and appliances. We hope to have the Certificat of Occupancy by late March so we can use the building as our spring retreats begin coming out! Already, over $50,000K has been donated specifically for this project.
We hope to have Phase 2 completed by Summer 2013, which would include removing the drop down ceiling in the dining hall to expose the higher ceiling with gorgeous, wooden beams. We also plan to add ceiling fans and heating and air in the dining hall room. Some of the old windows will be removed and replaced with wall. Others will be replaced with new, more durable windows that are easier to clean.
Please consider how you may be involved with Phase 1 or Phase 2 of this project as well! We are seeking people and/or groups that have materials and supplies resources, that may be able to offer volunteer labor/service project, or that may offer financial gifts. If you would like to give a one-time donation, a monthly donation, or if you may be able to contribute a gift-in-kind (labor, supplies, etc.), please contact us at office@campmerriwood.net or call the office at 336-766-5151 and ask to speak with Terry Covington, Director.
